Chiropractic, in Latin, means “done by hand”. Chiropractors are licensed and recognized health care professionals who are trained in using their hands to treat the body. The Science of Chiropractic focuses on the movement and physiological balances of the entire musculoskeletal system – joints, muscles, nerves, and soft tissues. Chiropractors are trained to assess the body for any such movement dysfunction or imbalance – many of which go undetected by the patient! The most common disturbances to the musculoskeletal system treated by Chiropractors are, but not limited to:
Upon diagnosis of the aliment or disorder, the Chiropractor will create a treatment plan for the patient outlining the prognosis, treatment details, and exercise routines that are to be followed by both the practitioner and the patient in the coming future. Chiropractors are trained in a variety of different techniques and often will combine different techniques within the same treatment plan. The “adjustment” – the chiropractor’s most popular treatment – is used to help improve joint mobility and increase body functions. When a body part has been injured or has been placed under long-term stress, the body will begin to develop inflammation, tension, pain, and restrictions at the point of injury in an effort to heal itself. Such healing mechanisms in many instances result in the body to not heal back to the same state that it was in prior to the stress or injury, decreasing recovery times. The controlled thrust and proper hand positioning of the chiropractic adjustment is designed to reduce tension, and decrease inflammation and pain, all resulting in fewer restrictions and increase joint mobility.
The Science of Chiropractic is not only beneficial for pain management but is a highly sought out treatment to improve health and maintain wellness. Chiropractic care is often used as a preventative treatment. By routinely assessing the body’s most worked out joints and limbs, a chiropractor can help maintain proper function and balance, preventing stresses and injuries. Results of treatment varies on an individual basis.
At Full Function Rehab & Wellness, Dr. Caruana is not only trained in the science of the chiropractic adjustment to help his patients, but he is licensed in Active Release Technique (A.R.T®), Graston®, and Medical Acupuncture. Dr. Caruana commonly uses all these techniques or combinations of them, in his treatment plan to optimize the patient’s mobility and decrease recovery times.
Is Chiropractic safe?
Yes! Chiropractic care is a very safe form of natural healing. The ancient thought that chiropractors “crack” bones is a misconception. The Science of Chiropractic and the manipulations that are contained within it are all very controlled manoeuvres done by skilled, licensed practitioners. The body was designed to move without pain. Chiropractors are trained practitioners who allow for improved joint mobility by, in many cases, applying a light, controlled thrust (the adjustment) on the problematic joints leading to increased range of motion and decreased pain. The adjustments are not “cracks” but thought out, carefully planned movements designed to bring wellness and health back to the affected area.
Complications from chiropractic care are rare. As with many medical / dentistry treatments, Dr. Caruana will discuss all potential side effects and any risks that may be associated with the treatment that a patient will receive, along with its benefits. Chiropractic care is safe and suitable for all ages.
