Contemporary Medical Acupuncture is a controlled, precise peripheral nerve (nerves that are located outside the spine and brain) stimulation technique. In Contemporary Medical Acupuncture, fine acupuncture needles are inserted into specific neurofunctional sites on the body, and stimulated manually or with electricity for the therapeutic purpose of changing abnormal activity of the nervous system and/or endocrine, exocrine and immune systems, in pain syndromes, functional problems, and any diseases that may be linked to these mechanisms. Acupuncture modulates these abnormal activities by, but not limited to, increasing blood circulation to the affected area, improving nerve signalling, and decreasing muscle tension and pain. Results of treatment varies on an individual basis.
Contemporary Medical Acupuncture is mechanism-based, not disease-based. Therefore, therapeutic goals and treatment targets are selected by the practitioner based on the identified neurological dysfunctions contributing to symptoms. Sometimes Contemporary Medical Acupuncture treatments result in disappearance of the symptoms, while other times the technique results in permanent resolution of the dysfunction, especially when dysregulation of the nervous system was the underlying issue.
